قام الاتحاد الخالکيديکي في شمال بحر إيجة على هامش الهجوم الفارسي الثاني على بلاد اليونان عام 480ق.م. وهو عبارة عن تجمّع لأکثر من ثلاثين مدينة مستقلة في منطقة شبه جزيرة خالکيديکي في کيانٍ واحدٍ (توحدت فيه مع بعضها ولم تنصهر بشکل يلغي استقلاليتها) يحمل ذات الأهداف المشترکة وذات المواقف تجاه قضايا دفاعية وسياسية. وتعتبر بوتيديا وأولينثوس أهم تلک المدن. مارس ذلک الاتحاد في بلاد اليونان دورًا عسکريًا وأمنيًا في مواجهة مختلف التحديات والمخاطر خارجيًا وداخليًا خلال القرنين الخامس والرابع ق.م. الذي شهد خلالهما العالم اليوناني عددًا من الأحداث السياسية المهمة التي کادت أن تقضي عليه. فقد بدأ القرن الخامس ق.م. بمحاولات الفرس لغزو بلاد اليونان وما تبعها من جولات المعارک بين الفرس واليونانيين، وانتهى بنهاية الحروب الأهلية البلوبونيزية بين المدن اليونانية بزعامة اسبرطة وأثينا. ثم القرن الرابع ق.م. الذي شهد محاولات مقدونيا لفرض سيادتها على بلاد اليونان.
 
The Chalkidiki Union was established in the northern Aegean Sea on the sidelines of the second Persian attack on Greece in 480B.C. It is a gathering of  more than thirty independent cities in the region of Chalkidiki Peninsula into one entity (it united with each other and did not fuse in a way that nullifies its independence) it carries the same common goals and the same attitudes towards defense and political issue, and Poteidaia and Olynthus are the most important of these cities. That union in Greece exercised a military and security role in facing various challenges and dangers, externally and internally, during the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. in which the Greek world witnessed a number of important political events that almost destroyed it, The fifth century B.C. began with the Persians attempts to invade Greece and the ensuing rounds of battles between the Persians and Greeks, and ended with the end of the Peloponnesian civil wars between the Greek cities led by the Sparta and Athens, then the fourth century B.C. which witnessed Macedoniaʼs attempts to impose its sovereignty over Greece.
