Turned Wood Decoration in Coptic and Byzantine Art: A Comparative Archaeological and Artistic Study in Terms of the Wooden Turning Works Found and the Depiction of the Turning Decoration in Terms of Form, Features, and Continuity

Abstract

Turned wood appeared in Coptic art in various shapes and small sizes, and it preceded Islamic art in using this decoration, as was evident from the pieces that were found in the ruins of the Monastery of St. Apollo in Bawit and Edfu, as well as through wall photography, where this decoration appeared on furniture. The Coptic throne chair has been around since the eighth century AD and continued to appear until the thirteenth century in wall paintings and manuscripts. However, wooden works containing carvings continued to appear until the present era, in parallel with Islamic art, which dealt with this decoration. Rather, it was one of the most important decorations, however, was that the diversity of Islamic art Turned wood units was richer than that of Coptic art, and it played a role in the transfer of this decoration to Byzantine art through the Ottomans, which will become clear in the study, which will address a group of wall images in Coptic art, Byzantine icons, and preserved artifacts. In museums in Egypt and abroad.
