Aramaic Phonological and Morphological Features in the Elephantine Papyri, Biblical Aramaic and the Palestinian Talmud Mss: A Comparative Diachronic Linguistic Study

Abstract

Linguistic changes have accompanied Aramaic throughout its history. Due to its distribution across most of the ancient Near East during the Achaemenid Empire (538-330 B.C), Aramaic became an official international language. Then, after the fall of Persia by Alexander the Great in 330 B.C, it merged with other languages.​​ This was clearly reflected on the historical trajectory of Aramaic and the emergence of its dialects and their division into two branches: Western and Eastern. This led to linguistic differences between these dialects. Therefore, it is often useful to study Elephantine Aramaic and related dialects diachronically to demonstrate how they developed from earlier dialects. Although Aramaic became a widely used standard language, it was not completely homogeneous, and linguistic differences between its dialects can still be detected through the study of original texts.    
This study aimed to identify the features of the Aramaic language and its dialects by examining selected phonological and morphological phenomena in three Aramaic dialects: Egyptian Elephantine Aramaic (5th-4th century B.C), Biblical Aramaic (5th-2nd century B.C) and Palestinian Talmud Aramaic (2nd-4th century A.D). This was to determine the etymology of these phenomena, state the common linguistic features, and specify the distinctive features of each dialect. Moreover, it demonstrated the extent of similarities and differences between them and shed light on the linguistic development of the Aramaic language.
The study followed the diachronic and comparative approaches to detect and analyze linguistic phenomena from their earliest periods. It reached many important conclusions. For instance, the Aramaic language had developed phonologically and morphologically in Metathesis, Ellipsis and Pronominal Suffixes. The study also demonstrated that the similarities between the three Aramaic dialects outweighed the differences. Furthermore, it showed that the Aramaic of the Palestinian Talmud had distinct features that made it differ from Elephantine Aramaic and Biblical Aramaic.
