The Two Epithets +w-Hr and +wDw-Hr/tp in the Religious Texts of Ancient Egypt

Abstract

This paper aims to study the two epithets +w-Hr and +wDw-Hr/tp in the religious texts of ancient Egypt. It will focus on inscriptions and scenes, written on papyri or carved and illustrated on the walls of tombs and temples. Through a religious-analytical reading of these scenes and inscriptions, it becomes evident that the first form, +w-Hr, appears as a demon and as an epithet of Apophis (Apep). Meanwhile, the second form, +wDw-Hr/tp, is exclusively associated with Apophis and is restricted to the Books of the Netherworld, where it describes the ongoing cosmic struggle between Ra and Apophis during the night in the afterlife. This struggle ultimately concludes with the subjugation and neutralization of Apophis, enabling the sun to rise the following morning, marking the beginning of a new day.
The study also aims to compare the two epithets +w-Hr and +wDw-Hr/tp, to determine whether the role played by +w-Hr differs from that of +wDw-Hr/tp. To this end, the researcher analyzes the occurrences of +w-Hr based on the contexts in which the epithet appears, without adhering to a chronological arrangement of the sources. This approach is chosen in order to examine +w-Hr specifically as a demon associated with disease. The epithet is attested only once in a medical context—in the Leiden Magical Papyrus I 348—before it later appears in the Book of Caverns from the New Kingdom, and again on the inner side of the outer wall of the Temple of Edfu from the Ptolemaic period.
In contrast, the study of +wDw-Hr/tp follows a chronological order of attestations. This epithet first appears on the second shrine of King Tutankhamun (JE 1321) in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, followed by its appearance in the Book of Gates, then the Book of Caverns, and finally in the tomb of King Ramesses IX (KV 6).
